Top News Stories

GenCon sets new attendance record: Although games sales have been settling after the pandemic boom, you wouldn’t know it from GenCon, which sold out at 72,000 attendees last weekend. The event is “pushing towards the edge of maximum capacity”, although source ICv2 notes the construction of a new hotel which may allow for further expansion. Although the con is certifiably huge now, it still has a long way to go to unseat the biggest event in Indianapolis (the motor speedway has a capacity of over 250,000, and that doesn’t count expansions for the big race).

From the archives this week we have our first ever August 9th release! Check out our review of Green Ronin’s Hobby Games: The 100 Best.

Discussion of the Week

Call of Cthulhu is bigger than D&D in China too: It’s easy to focus narrowly on what’s close to home, so being reminded of what the hobby looks like in other countries is always a refreshing wakeup call. Interesting to see Fabula Ultima so successful in China, outraising Call of Cthulhu Keeper’s Handbook by around 2.5:1. Also cool to see local scenario authors, though the games themselves seem overwhelmingly western; there is a mention in the comments of 侠界之旅 (Xiá Jiè Zhī Lǚ), a martial arts RPG.
