From the Archives
This summer I began reading the Book of the New Sun series by Gene Wolfe, a set of four science fantasy novels from the 1980s which are said to have inspired a lot of the ‘new weird’ seen in more contemporary novels and RPGs. In some cases the inspiration ended up being very direct as I kept reading. From the archives this week we’re looking at the game which, unbeknownst to me at the time, took the word ‘zoanthrop’ from Wolfe’s writing: Troika. Although there are other games which were inspired by Wolfe, the humpbacked sky made so much more sense after reading some of the adventures of Severian the Torturer.
Discussion of the Week
What RPG do you have no plan of trying, but are glad that it exists, and why?: While Reddit discussions are often (fairly) accused of devolving into a list of everyone’s favorites or least favorites, this thread has some thoughtful responses on what facets of a game help enrich the hobby, even when they don’t make it to the table.
