Top News Stories

Netflix buying another comic company (plus Warner Brothers): While the deal isn’t closed yet, the massive Warner Brothers acquisition by Netflix has made news and raised alarm bells for consumer advocates everywhere. ICv2’s coverage of the deal highlighted what it may mean for comics, but there is a small buried lede that the deal would include Warner Brothers Games. While Warner Brothers Games is mostly a portfolio of video game developers (including a few you may know, Monolith and Avalanche), ICv2 coverage rightly points out that Netflix would have to change its licensing strategy (which has historically included TTRPGs, thanks Stranger Things) going forward. Watch this space for more details, and for the unsurprised news that another streaming monopoly has caused piracy to keep growing.

From the Archives

Another look back to our first full year this week; in December of 2017 Aaron covered the basics of the Session Zero. As games continue to expand, this is an evergreen topic: How do you get everyone on the same page of what may be a months- or years-long campaign before kicking it off? From the archives this week is Level One Wonk: Session Zero.

Discussion of the Week

What’s your “White Whale” of campaigns that you’ve never been able to run?: What a coincidence! This exact idea (down to the phrase White Whale) came up in one of the Cannibal Halfling Endie Awards posts this week. This thread has a great spread of ideas that sound amazing but are too specific, too ambitious, or too mechanically complex to easily make happen.

  1. My own white whale of a campaign is a desire to run a Traveller game. I bought the core Mongoose first edition black book back in 2011 or 2012 because of the life path character creation (and the stories that in Traveller you can die in character creation, although that is really hard in Mongoose Traveller, it is technically still possible). Still have yet to get Traveller to the table though I’ve rolled up many characters and many sectors.
