A lot can change in eight years. Cyberpunk as a genre has always been popular for TTRPGs, with the cornerstone titles (Cyberpunk and Shadowrun) arriving early enough to have an exchange with the literary side of the genre. When we discussed Cyberpunk as an RPG genre in 2018, though, there was a lot that hadn’t happened yet, not the least of which was the revitalization of capital-C Cyberpunk with Cyberpunk 2077, Cyberpunk Edgerunners, and (of course) Cyberpunk Red. From the archives this week it’s Level One Wonk: Cyberpunk.
Discussion of the Week
The biggest design flaw in D&D combat isn’t balance… it’s that 80% of your time is spent waiting: While this isn’t strictly a D&D problem, it is certainly a trad RPG problem, and in terms of games that are bad at this and sell the most…it’s a D&D problem. There are a number of different solutions described in the thread: mechanics like simultaneous action and popcorn initiative help keep players paying attention and reduce waiting. Simpler systems mean less time waiting, turns going faster. And of course, the solution used by most board games, each player taking their turn changes the state of the board and forces players to pay at least a little attention to what’s going on the whole time. I can say from experience D&D 4e did this ‘board state’ pretty well, but any game with a lot of movement and some representation (like zone-based conflicts) can work.
