ENnie Awards winners announced: The ENnie Awards were announced last night at GenCon, highlighting which products best mobilized their fanbase for voting out of those nominated by the judges. Highlights include Legend of the Mist, which one silver for Best Game, silver for Best Rules, gold for Best Supplement (for the Action Grimoire), silver for Free Game (the Learn-to-play Comic Adventure), silver for Production Values (the Ravenhome Slipcase), and gold for Best Interior Art. Also highlighted was SPINE, which won gold for Best Solo Game, and Triangle Agency, whose Triangle Agency Fan Zine won gold for Best community content. GenCon means, really, a time to celebrate 5e content, like the multiple ENnies won by the decidedly mediocre Crooked Moon. We’ve been observing, considering, and pondering 5e content for a while now, as anyone who covers the hobby will do at some level before either wholly embracing or outright rejecting it. Roughly four years ago we reviewed a game which proved that even truly strange 5e crossovers could be done well, but only if the designer was willing to strip out what made 5e a poor choice (even when that included core mechanics and the entire magic system). From the archives this week is our Doctors and Daleks review.

Dungeons & Dragons announces Universes Beyond line, kicking off IP crossovers: The biggest buzz generator at GenCon so far has been the announcement that D&D is getting its own Universes Beyond line, following the Magic:the Gathering product line of the same name. Universes Beyond is a fancy name for ‘licensed tie-ins’, and Magic made a lot of money (I was going to say ‘did well’ but that’s likely a step too far) with the Final Fantasy and Lord of the Rings sets among many others. The first Universes Beyond properties for D&D will be World of Warcraft followed by Star Wars, with other rumored properties being Harry Potter and K-Pop Demon Hunters. The ENWorld link provides some good discussion, but as for me, it’s likely time to tap the sign.
