Supreme Court will hear IEEPA tariff arguments on expedited schedule: The Supreme Court is set to hear arguments regarding the International Emergency Economic Powers Act, or IEEPA, on November 5th. IEEPA is the law which serves as the basis of most of the tariffs imposed under the current administration and, unlike other legal avenues like Sections 301 or 232 of the Trade Expansion Act, has never been used for tariffs before. As such, an Appeals Court has already struck down the use of IEEPA to enact tariffs, but that ruling was stayed pending an appeal to the Supreme Court. How is this relevant to gaming? Well, GAMA is one of the organizations which filed an amicus brief opposing IEEPA tariffs, and as seen by the cancellation of a Magpie card-based RPG Kickstarter late last week, the impact of tariffs on analog game economics, especially printing, is profound.
From the Archives
It’s the day after Halloween, and Cannibal Halfling has been here for spooky season ever since our first go-round. From the archives this week is Level One Wonk: Don’t Rest Your Head, our review/explainer of the mind-bending horror game.
Discussion of the Week
What makes me want to run a game?: Writing in his blog Old Men Running the World, DIE author Kieron Gillen discusses the elements of TTRPGs that actually get him excited, contrasting his preferences with the nine games currently reviewed by Quinns Quest. It’s a well-articulated view that aligns with a viewpoint about games held here: The most exciting games are those whose rules understand and amplify the intended fiction of the game.
