Top News Stories

Hasbro execs sued for securities violations: The lede is extremely buried in this one. The lawsuit, brought forth by two Hasbro shareholders, basically states that CEO Chris Cocks and other Hasbro execs shirked their fiduciary duties by…checks notes…printing too many Magic: the Gathering cards. Now, to be fair, there is some merit to the idea that creating too many Magic expansions eroded the value of the brand, but the bar this lawsuit has to clear is pretty high. Even if the strategic decisions surrounding Magic’s brand management were poor, it’s not illegal to be bad at your job, and the argument that this was done intentionally to juice a share buyback is essentially a conspiracy theory. More relevant to this audience, the lawsuit rests on the idea that most of the monetary value in Magic: the Gathering developed because the cards command high prices on the secondary market. If the plaintiffs win and there’s precedent that collector value is fiduciary duty, it could be the beginning of the end of TCGs that are actually fun.

This day in 2018 we talked a little bit about using the real Earth as a setting for your gaming. It’s something we’ve continued to do, including a roadtrip through post-apocalyptic Pennsylvania and a Cyberpunk city plopped down in Kansas. From the archives it’s Level One Wonk: Gaming on Earth.

Discussion of the Week

What is your favorite depiction of TTRPGs in media?: I think a lot about how D&D and other games have ‘crossed over’, and this thread has a good list of them. I had completely forgotten there was a Dexter’s Laboratory D&D episode.
