Top News Stories

Settlement with some diamond consignment vendors proposed: The saga of the Diamond Comic Distributors bankruptcy may be coming to an end, but with that are some dollar figures that indicate how screwy the situation has gotten. In short, the settlement means that the consignors agree to give up funds in escrow that were held from unauthorized sales of inventory by Diamond’s acquiring company, Sparkle Pop, in exchange for getting their remaining inventory back. These unauthorized sales proceeds amount to nearly $900,000, and Paizo in particular will get shorted nearly $230,000. That said, the inventory value being disputed was nearly $50 million, so as rough as that is it may be a small price to pay for finally ending this.

Discussion of the Week

Masks 2e Kickstarter delayed: This past week Magpie Games announced that they would be pushing the start date of their Masks 2e Kickstarter out to 2027 from its original intended start around September of this year. In the original post, Brendan Conway cites feedback around GenCon, both literally at the con and online in the month or so leading up to the con, as providing the impetus for slowing the rollout and having more playtesting, both public and internally. There will be a Masks 2e quickstart released in September to enable this. While many of the Reddit comments are fairly histrionic (as one would expect), the discussion does bring up a couple good underlying points: First, what was the feedback that got the company to push their entire production schedule? Second, was feedback on rules the core reason? With Temeraire and Fallen London still in development, and a steadily declining reputation as a good crowdfunding citizen (I say this as an Urban Shadows 2e backer), it sounds like Magpie may be thinking across multiple risk horizons when it comes to updating arguably their most beloved game.

From the Archives

I figure it’s best to go to the straightforward pull from the archives this week. Why is the Masks 2e Kickstarter attracting so much discussion and heartache? Why is a ten year old PbtA game raising so many hackles? Well, in short, because it’s one of the best from the mid-2010s second generation of PbtA. From the archives this week is our review of Masks and interview with designer Brendan Conway.
