Cannibal Halfling’s Reviewed Games at PAX Unplugged 2024

Cannibal Halflings are once again haunting the halls of PAX Unplugged, and once again we’re seeing a lot of familiar faces (and games). There’s… so darn much, there’s no way I’ll cover everything we’ve even already looked at, never mind everything at Unplugged that is worth checking out, but hey, got to start somewhere, right?

R. Talsorian Games – Booth 2857

Our favorite company from Night City are in fine form as always, with all the things you’d expect, including the Edgerunners Mission Kit. Notably they have the Shadow Scar starter kit, and yes, I’ve got a review copy of that – among other things. Rob of R Tal tells me the original plan was to have the core rulebook ready to go for Unplugged, but the art isn’t quite done, so they pivoted to creating the starter kit. They also dropped the character creation system for the game for free digitally, and the physical version thereof is likely to be a PAXU ’24 exclusive.

 Studio 2 Publishing – Booth 2851

Studio 2 provides shelf space for many, many games. This includes everything Fabula Ultima, including the High and Techno Fantasy books and the GM’s kit, and Cowboy Bebop. Going to listen to a bit of Trifecta Tango on the way home.

Many Worlds Tavern – Booth 2751

If you want a cup of tea or a mug of coffee, the Many Worlds Tavern is open for business! Notably, since the last Unplugged they’ve started releasing 5e D&D material through their Patreon, straddling the line between tabletop accessory and game designers in an interesting way, and they’re offering free months of the subscription to folks who swing by so you can check it out.

And yes, these first  three booths were all right next to each other, and yes it was a very dangerous spot of the con to find myself (and my wallet) in.

Possum Creek Games – Booth 4101

They’ve got your Wanderhome, your Sleepaway, but perhaps most notable is there being room for everyone at Yazeba’s Bed & Breakfast. Distribution for the magical slice of life legacy game has been a bit of a fracas – legal sorceries have kept Possum Creek from telling us why, and the spilling of the tea is acutely anticipated – so copies in the wild have been harder to find. At this con, though, you can get the goods straight from the source.

moreblueberries – Booth 4318

4318 is a shared booth under the banner of Turtlebun, including the excellent-looking Good Luck Press, who I hope to write more about soon. For the purposes of this article, though, repeat-Zine Month coverage feature and Rom Com Drama Bomb designer Elliot Davis is having a blast there too! Davis also took a turn at the Crowdfunding Carnival recently, so there’s more to come!

Possible Worlds – Booth 4052

All of the possible worlds and then some are available at this booth. stopping by a quick chat today, there are plans for Possible Worlds to expand to publishing multiple designers’ games, an interesting prospect given what PW has managed already!

Rowan Rook and Deckard – Booth 4355

Whether you want to Eat The Reich, be unbound, or deal emotional damage in a TTRPG isekai/Jumanji situation, you can swing by RRD’s booth to get what you need. For the DIE aficionados, they have the first two supplements available as well, and a bunch of other interesting pieces of work.

Mythworks – Booth 3963

Wildsea with all the trimmings features heavily here, but it’s not the only thing worth looking at in Booth 3963. For something comparatively hot off the CHG presses, Koriko can be found here as well!

Nerdbuger Games – Booth 4109

It always pays to have good strong hands, and there ever more flavors of Capers, among more offerings from another repeat CHG feature!

Gila RPGS – Booth 4028

As always, Spencer Campbell has more games than you shake a die at, including the many incarnations of the LUMEN system – did you know there’s a 2.0 version of it? It looks neat!

Like I said, this is only a sampling. I know for a fact that Jason Anarchy, offcut, Free League, Retronym, and more are in that expo hall, I just wasn’t able to get to them yet.

The overall vibe, though, is of a lot more interesting indie and small publishers than in previous years, and it’s really exciting! Looking at the map, you could spend ten minutes at every booth just in the 4000s area and burn away most of a con day.

Oh, and, um, there’s a lot of great stuff to be found at Indie Press Revolution’s Booth 4321.

A happy con to all who are working and attending there! Go check out some cool games (especially at Games on Demand in Rm 107, wink wink).
